Cell-C LTE: Intermittent periods of packet loss and high ping

Hi Cell_C

I have been using Cell-C LTE since September last year. I currently have a Giga 200 package that generally works very well. According to speedtests, I often get 20+ Mbps download and upload.

However, there are times when it becomes unusable; 20% packet loss and ping times increase dramatically. Rebooting the router in this situation often helps.

Over the last two months, I have been monitoring the problem and have tested with a different router with its own built-in LTE modem, its own external antenna which also happens to connect to a different base station, and the problem occurs there too.

When things are good, I often see an IP address starting 41.48 at the third hop:
Code:

$ traceroute google.com
traceroute to google.com (216.58.223.46), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
 1  mikrotik (192.168.88.1)  0.416 ms  0.548 ms  0.894 ms
 2  * * *
 3  41.48.22.42 (41.48.22.42)  50.775 ms  50.779 ms  50.806 ms
 4  * * *
 5  10.228.233.193 (10.228.233.193)  50.565 ms  50.689 ms  50.687 ms
 6  41.48.16.1 (41.48.16.1)  50.439 ms  43.385 ms  43.384 ms
 7  41.48.0.2 (41.48.0.2)  43.476 ms  58.969 ms  58.963 ms
 8  google.ixp.joburg (196.60.8.166)  39.053 ms  49.091 ms  49.029 ms
 9  72.14.239.129 (72.14.239.129)  49.151 ms  49.179 ms  49.134 ms
10  jnb01s08-in-f14.1e100.net (216.58.223.46)  49.168 ms  49.121 ms  39.662 ms

When things are bad, I often see 41.50 there:
Code:

$ traceroute google.com
traceroute to google.com (216.58.223.46), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
 1  mikrotik (192.168.88.1)  0.427 ms  0.566 ms  0.648 ms
 2  * * *
 3  41.50.7.234 (41.50.7.234)  60.252 ms  60.255 ms  60.259 ms
 4  * * *
 5  10.220.232.193 (10.220.232.193)  50.357 ms  50.306 ms  50.333 ms
 6  41.50.16.1 (41.50.16.1)  50.136 ms  43.069 ms  42.969 ms
 7  41.50.0.2 (41.50.0.2)  42.982 ms  39.570 ms  339.613 ms
 8  41.48.253.70 (41.48.253.70)  39.655 ms  39.603 ms  39.639 ms
 9  72.14.197.146 (72.14.197.146)  49.303 ms  49.312 ms  39.662 ms
10  72.14.239.129 (72.14.239.129)  39.675 ms  279.750 ms  189.834 ms
11  jnb01s08-in-f14.1e100.net (216.58.223.46)  159.641 ms  249.897 ms  139.829 ms

The workaround seems to be to reboot the router until the third hop shows a 41.48 address. Is this a known problem?
