Beware CellC's airtime window

I have a cellphone that I use exclusively for cycling. It's a cheapie that I don't mind wrecking in a fall.

It's got plenty of airtime loaded in case there's an emergency, and that's all that it will be used for.

So yesterday I see it's displaying "limited service". I figure that's just another CellC network service issue, and head out. Luckily no emergencies.

Today it has the same message, so I log in to check the account. Guess what? The account is closed.

I called the Help Desk and they tell me that the account has been closed and the number is being re-cycled, due to "inactivity". That's after I reloaded the phone around 3 months ago, and it has about R80 on it.

This annoys me on so many levels:
Why does CellC have this stupid little airtime window, when the other companies have one that lasts practically forever?
Why is it impossible to even find out what the remaining airtime window is? (and having to call the Help Desk to find out counts as impossible!)

One thing is for sure - I'm changing the SP for this phone. And now that Telkom has come to the fore on pricing I'll be having a good look at them for all my other phones. (Edit: Just looked. They've got these silly little "gotchas" in their pricing, like "valid for 7 days after recharging", so they're out).

I was in the Northern Cape last weekend, and beyond Kimberley there was practically no coverage at all. I'm also tired of all the dropped calls here in Jhb on my daily phone (and despite logging a call they've not even come back to me on resolving it).
